WINNERS ANNOUNCED – Civilization: The Way We Live Now Competition

Uncategorized

Happy New Year!

🥂🍾

We hope you had a great start into 2019 and
have beautiful memories from last year!

We are proud to announce the winners of
“Civilization: The Way We Live Now” Competition to celebrate the publication of the homonymous book by William A. Ewing and Holly Roussell in partnership with Thames & Hudson publishers.

Congratulations to the winners and thank you to all who entered the competition, from many different countries around the world.

Check out the winning images and prizes below:

– 1st Prize: Mona Singh – India
A Weekend or Evening Photography Workshop at LSP
+ one book: Civilization: The Way We Live Now.

“This image, to us, translates exactly what is happening to civilization. Barefoot, we walk inwards, deeper into our bubbles, facing walls, connected by technology and disconnected from real relationships. The empty and decadent surroundings are room to Aladdin’s (now rolled) flying carpet, an analogy to our forgotten imagination and dreams”

– 2nd Prize: Diana Hagues – UK
Book Civilization: The Way We Live Now.

“No matter where we are in the world, mothers will continue to have an important role in the thriving of any civilization. Juggling careers and family responsibilities, passing knowledge through generations, this image felt very “familiar” to all of us.

– 3rd Prize: David Robinson – Japan
Book Civilization: The Way We Live Now.

“A society where a separate carriage for “Women Only” in public transport is needed can be a sign of how bad things are. But, in our ever positive perspective of the world, we prefer to see it as a sign of change, into a future where things will get always better.”

The whole point of taking pictures is so that you don’t have to explain things with words.” – Elliott Erwitt
In Nicholas Dyer’s photo, at first you see a couple of African wild dogs playing, and you think, “meh, so what,” and then it hits you hard on the head like a sledgehammer and you do a double take like in a cartoon. Your jaw drops and you hear yourself saying, “whaaaaaaaat!?”

With photography, I like to create fiction out of reality. I try and do this by taking society’s natural prejudice and giving this a twist – Martin Parr

You just gotta love Martin Parr. His unique, over-saturated, daylight flash-blasted photos are brimming with humour, innuendo and curious details that have put him up there with the likes of Gary Winogrand.

Photography tip: Introduction to lenses

Let’s just get one thing out of the way: The kit lens that came with your camera is actually quite a good lens. And if you bought a kit with two lenses, say an 18-55mm and a 55-200, you are basically one lucky guy or girl.
Camera manufacturers build cameras and lenses to make your life easier. So, kit lenses are very versatile, light and easy to carry around in a small camera bag, and they were built to cover most of the needs of aspiring photographers, from shooting wide-angle sunsets on the beach, to zooming into those evasive wild animals on your safari.

Only ten years ago, professional photographers would scoff at the idea of using a mobile phone to take good quality images, and they would burst out laughing at the thought that one day the humble smartphone would give professional cameras a run for their money.
