 Imagine a moustache being drawn onto the face of Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, or a hole being punched into Salvador Dali’s $24 million portrait of Paul Eluard. If you are not a photographer, you may not feel the same about a piece of negative as we do, but trust me, when it was shot by legends such as Walker Evan’s and Dorothea Lange only to be vandalised by some bureaucrat, I personally turn into the Hulk.

For the uninitiated, auto mode on the camera would seem like a blessing. Point the damn thing where you want to take the photo and the camera does everything for you. Except it doesn’t. As expensive as it may be, as professional as it may be advertised, and despite leaps and jump in technological advances, modern digital cameras are still, well, stupid.  

In fact, the term “point and shoot” should really be banned, or renamed to “point, shoot and hope for the best,” because really that is what we are doing. You stick it on Auto mode, you take a shot of this wonderful moment and view the image only to discover the camera didn’t focus where you wanted it to. Or the photo is all shaky, or noisy (grainy), or entirely out of focus.

Derek Lomas is living proof that it’s never too late to start photography as a career. The LSP Product Photography trainer worked for four years as a shipping clerk after leaving school, and he hated every minute of it.  

So he joined an evening photography course and he hasn’t look back since. With clients like L’Oréal and Yves Saint Laurent, Derek is now an established photographer with an incredible portfolio, and was eager to share some of his experiences, and offer some tips to our students.

If you’ve ever taken a photo on the street, chances are someone has already asked you what you are doing and why you are doing it, mainly by security guards in and outside buildings.

These people can be very intimidating, can at times be aggressive and even make up laws to dissuade you from taking photos. They can ask threaten you with lawsuits, and demand you delete the photos, or even give them your memory cards. This can be a very off-putting, traumatic and stressful experience for any budding photographer, so we thought we would we would, in a nutshell, clarify for you once and for all who, and what you can and cannot photograph in the UK. Art Riot: Post-Soviet Actionism is a very interesting exhibition held at Saatchi Gallery until the end of the year, that uses photography to document Russian protest art over the past 25 years.

According to the gallery’s press release, the exhibition takes place on the 100th anniversary of Russia’s October Revolution, and compares many of the issues that artist face in post-communist Russia to those in 1917, such as problems of individual freedom in the face of both political ideology and also religion. The exhibition will feature such performance artists as Oleg Kulik, Pussy Riot, Pyotr Pavlensky, Blue Noses and some others and display various genres and types of protest art from posters and slogans to video art, staged photography and performances.

Oleg Kulik ranks among the most interesting and controversial Russian artists. He has managed to attract the attention of art critics and exhibition curators by his performance shows, characterised by “strong expression” where he himself assumes a role of “artist-animal”. He would be a dog, a bird, a fish, a bull. The artist thus simplifies his performance language to the basic emotional vocabulary of an animal.

Photo by Henri Cartier-Bresson – Magnum Photos

You will forgive us for repeatedly mentioning Henri Cartier-Bresson, but in this month’s photography tip, I can think of no one better than the great master himself when it comes to talking about elements of design.

Bresson said that the greatest joy for him while photographing was looking for Geometry. In other words he looked for structures, saying that it was a visual pleasure, an intellectual pleasure to put everything in the right place.

“It’s a recognition of an order that is in front of you,” he said.

London Museum of Photography to open in 2018

A Swedish gallery is set to open a centre for photography in London in the second half of 2018.

Fotografiska, who runs the world renowned photography museum in Stockholm has announced that it has pre-let premises at Whitechapel High Street, where it is to house the  London Museum of Photography.

More accessible than ever before, taking pictures is now part of our daily lives.

We document everything: from what we eat at breakfast to the book we read at night.

Taking photos has become so natural that we forget how using a camera can be a tool to help us see life in a different way.

In composition, we can often improve the way a scene looks by adjusting how we’re looking at it. Learning to see things from varied angles and perspectives can only have a positive impact in every other aspect of our lives.
