In Nicholas Dyer’s photo, at first you see a couple of African wild dogs playing, and you think, “meh, so what,” and then it hits you hard on the head like a sledgehammer and you do a double take like in a cartoon. Your jaw drops and you hear yourself saying, “whaaaaaaaat!?”

Wildlife photographers spend days, if not months to capture incredible moments in our natural world, such as lions fighting, a rare hatching of birds in the wild, and even take down of prey by predators. But not these photographers. These guys just are looking for nature’s comedians as they strive to capture the perfect shot for the Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards.

And there’s no better way to start 2018 than with these incredibly funny shots of turtles slapping fishes, a jet-propelled duck, monkeys on bikes and penguins on the way to church. In order to capture these kinds of shots the photographers don’t only need skill, but an incredible eye for detail.
